Thema dieses Buchs ist die Konkurrenz der Christ- und Sozialdemokraten sowie der Sozialisten um Europa in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und in Italien. Wie haben sich die Parteien zur europäischen Integration positioniert? Welche europapolitischen Strategien wurden verfolgt und welches Bild hatten sie von Europa? Diesen Fragen geht der Autor vor dem Hintergrund des Kalten Krieges und der Konsolidierung beider politischen Systeme nach. Dabei untersucht er auch benachbarte Politik- und Wortfelder des Begriffs Europa mit Blick auf die internationale, nationale sowie die jeweilige innerparteiliche Situation. Es wird deutlich, wie und wieso sich die Parteien gegeneinander positionierten und im Laufe der Zeit annäherten. Zeitlich setzt die Studie am Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs und somit am Anfang der jeweiligen politischen Systeme an. Sie reicht in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland bis zum Ende der Ära Adenauer und in Italien bis zur Regierung des ersten centro-sinistra unter Aldo Moro. The volume describes the competition of social democratic, Christ democratic und socialist parties in West-Germany and Italy after World War II in European policy. In the context of the framework of the Cold War and the consolidation of the national political systems the author examines how political parties take position in confront of the first steps of the European integration, which strategies they followed and which ideas of Europe the politicians dealt with. The analysis incorporates related policy fields and semantic fields of Europe incorporating the international and national situation and also the situations within the parties. The study shows, how and why the competition of the parties was at the beginning controversial and why competition diminished. The thesis ends with the end of the era of Adenauer in West-Germany and the first centro-sinistra government under Aldo Moro in Italy.
